October 2020 - June 2021
Rig-site management of Drilling & Frac operations for HPHT exploration wells in UAE, including complex HPHT well control, frac operations and extended well testing. All with 2.5% H2S.
Feb 2018 - Sept 2020
Worked as Drilling Superintendent & PM running the team to prepare for and drill an ultra deepwater [3000m] exploration campaign in Ghana on behalf of Aker Energy using a 6th Gen dual activity rig.
After the first well I moved to set up and head Exceeds team in Kuwait. We had a team of 4 preparing to drill 6 ultra HPHT wells offshore. Planning operations lasted 14mts in which time we made preparations for the contractor mobilisation [rig and all services]. We finalised well designs, developed the drilling programs, developed the logistics plan and all aspects of the HSE plans.
1997-2007; 2012 - 2015; 2017
I started my career with Shell and spent 10yrs as staff. In that time I obtained my Round 1 & 2 certification and worked up to Drilling Suprintendent for the T-201 in Brunei. I then returned to Shell as a consultant on several deepwate and HPHT projects accross the world.
2017 - Based in the Dubai office working on the Majnoon [Iraq] project as technical lead for two $400mm tenders for 3 rigs each for two years plus a tender for Hoist and completion services. Perform technical rig evaluation, finalise and hand over to BOC
2012 - 2015. Based in Norway working on a HPHT/Ultra-Deepwater [10,000ft] exploration campaign using the Globetrotter II around Africa, Then moved to lead the team planning for a deepwater exploration drilling campaign in Arctic Greenland with Stena Icemax. This project was postponed and in June '13 I was moved to work as an operations SDE running a deepwater HPHT exploration well off Norway. With the completion of this well, I moved back to the GT II team as a DS for the exploration wells to be drilled in Benin & Gabon.
In April 2014 moved to work in the Shell Dubai office as lead SDE on designing an extreme HPHT, 25% H2S well in Iraq. The well planning was in early stages with a plan to spud in 2017, the planning and design was taken to concept select and then put on hold in Q1 2015. I was moved to technical lead for a $500mm tender for 3 rigs for delivery in 2016. This was taken through to award and was then released due to the project going on hold while waiting for ministerial approval.
May 2017 - June 2017
Working in Côte d'Ivoire office supporting the drilling of 1 appraisal well and 2 exploration wells in 2000m+ waterdepth. The project includes 2 well tests as well as coring and extensive logging. Typical well depths are 3000m below the mudline. This project was very unexpectedly terminated after the second well was drilled.
Feburary 2016 - April 2017
Based on Transocean Constellation 1 as the senior HPHT drilling supervisor drilling a HPHT exploration well off Abu Dhabi. This is a deep pre-Khuff exploration well being drilled for ADNOC and QP. The well was drilled with top quartile operational performance using full HPHT fingerprinting techniques and H2S mitigation, without major HSE issues. The well was abandoned in April 2017 and the project came to an end.
March 2012 - August 2012
Drilling a wildcat Ultra HPHT well offshore Guyana, one of the top 5 highest HPHT wells in the world at the time. Managing day to day operational & engineering issues as well as more strategic aspects such as program optimisation based on what well conditions are encountered; casing design optimisation; kick tolerance; well control; abandonment. Unexpectedly high pore pressures and the close proximity of pore pressure and fracture gradient have required detailed operations reviews and risk assessments for each step. The well was finished early for safety reasons as the pore pressure exceeded what could be safely accommodated by the rig or well design. The team was then demobilised while Repsol considered the future with its partners.
March 2011 - March 2012
Drilled 4 HPHT wildcat exploration wells in varying water depth with the GSF-135. Due to staff shortages the team was 3 junior WSDEs on rotation and myself. Managed all engineering and operational aspects of the project, as a result had single point accountability for delivery of safe and efficient operations. Due to the small drilling window [<1 ppg] we deployed MPD. This was the first time it had been used in Nigeria or the region and the first time for this rig up on a semi. Implementing HPHT procedures in the section before the reservoir mitigated two potential well control events. Lead the team in controlling and recovering from two HP kicks as a result of geological uncertainty. In both cases there was less than 0.2ppg between the well flowing and losses so we had to use non-conventional well killing techniques. After the forth well the rig was released and the project ended.
